In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence.

The Peter Principle, Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull, 1969-1970, Pan Books

The Peter principle describes the evolution of an organization where the hierarchy becomes populated of people that are not good at what they are doing.

The reason: they have been promoted from positions they were good at, to positions where they don't do a good work so they get stuck there no longer being propmoted.

This effect is actually the Peter's collorary:

In time, every post tends to be occupied by an employee who is incompetent to carry out its duties.

The key now is knowing whether one is doing a good job in the current position or not. You may have reached your maximum level of incompetence.
